The La Jolla Open Aire Market was founded by La Jolla Elementary mom and Friends of La Jolla Elementary board member Sherry Ahern. In 1996, Sherry had a vision: create a community farmers market that could raise funds for a much-needed school library and librarian.

After two years of planning and persistence, and with support from the community, local organizations, Friends of La Jolla Elementary, and the San Diego Unified School District, the first market opened on October 25, 1998, with just 14 farmers and one artisan.

Today, more than 180 vendors come together every Sunday, supporting local farmers, artisans, and small businesses while creating a vibrant gathering place for the La Jolla community.

But our purpose has never changed. 100% of net market proceeds directly support La Jolla Elementary School, helping fund teachers, STEM, enrichment programs, and educational opportunities for our students.

The La Jolla Open Aire Market is a fundraiser benefiting La Jolla Elementary School and is operated by Friends of La Jolla Elementary, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

What began with a vision for a school library has grown into a beloved community tradition.
